spotlight: jeurys familia start 2

a few days ago i spotlighted mets pitching prospect jeurys familia, who had just made his first start of the high-a season.

he followed up that 7 inn., 7k performance with another gem on wednesday. he pitched 6 inn, with 1 hit, 2bb, 6k and 1 er. reports are that he threw three solid pitches (a fastball, change and slider) with his fastball touching 96.

familia got 7 groundball outs v 3 fly ball outs which is why he does not give up many hrs. the 2bb is a good sign as well.

by my account he has pitched 13 innings, with 2 hits, 2bb and 1er and 13ks. a lot of good signs here

keith law of espn had this to say about jeurys familia in his chat yesterday:

Q: Any chance Familia can be a starter? what do he need to develop and can he do it?

A: Command, and maybe a second pitch. He's a live arm - very live - but that's kind of it.

A: Familia's a reliever, or less

granted it's only high-a ball, but familia is ony 21 years old and has shown better command as evidenced by his lower bb rate and high k rate. not sure what his swing and miss rate is, but reports were that his change-up looked great in his last start.

if law says he needs better command and a second pitch, perhaps that is exactly what he's working on. it's a long way until we'll know what his future is for sure. until then we can always dream.
